Weevils are one of the largest insect families on the planet, with over 83,000 different species – and that’s just the ones we know about. This particular species, however, is only found in New Guinea.
These weevils, and many of their close relatives, are known as snout beetles because of their long snouts that they use to reach the parts of plants that other bugs can’t get to.
When zooming in for a closer look below, you’ll see the weevil’s lovely blue markings are actually made of rows and rows (and rows and rows. And rows) of tiny coloured scales. I drew each of these by hand, so you can only imagine how long this one took to draw.
