Flower Beetle

Cheirolasia burkei

Illustration of a brown, cream and black beetle with large, furry front legs
Location:South Africa
Size:30mm body
Diet:Fruit

C.burkei exhibits slight sexual dimorphism (where there are physical differences between the genders). Unlike the males, the last tarsal segment of the female’s front legs are not elongated or covered in yellow hairs*. She also lacks the male’s distinctive ‘crown’.

This was the second bug I ever drew, and in the detail shots below you’ll see my drawing style had a slightly more ‘cartoony’ quality to it. Over time, I have become a lot more realistic in my depictions, and have gone back and revised a number of my early drawings. This one is in need of updating.

*My illustration needs to be updated, as the specimen I used was completely lacking these hairs.
